Grace Lemon and Paddi Benson are two highly-accomplished Uilleann pipers who joined forces with James Patrick Gavin, an acclaimed fiddle player and guitarist, to explore the interlocking sounds of two pipes and write new music underpinned by narrative threads. Their debut project, ‘volume one – a curious dance’, was recorded in summer 2022 and is now set for release in September 2023. An original composition, this project reflects a shared interest in experimental and electronic music, as well as the tradition of storytelling – and folklore – within Irish music, as where they met.
This release received praise across the board, with Tradfolk.co concluding “four incredible musicians making music that is effortlessly strange, the soundtrack to a dancefloor overrun by unquiet ghosts”. Jude Rogers’ coveted folk column in the Guardian also sings the praises of the album, calling it a “fascinating play with ideas of dissonance and resonance”, and it featured on Ian Lynch’s Fire Draw Near podcast on the week of release.
The trio are currently based between London and Edinburgh. They headlined the recent sold-out label night in Dalston, London, where they were met with an overwhelming response. The trio are expecting to perform across the UK for the first time in 2024.
